Alaska charges no state sales tax at all, one of only five states with none. Local boroughs and cities are free to set their own local option tax instead, and roughly 100 to 148 of them do, some stacking a city rate on top of a borough rate with no confirmed statewide cap on how high the combined figure can run. Anchorage and Fairbanks add nothing extra, Juneau adds 5%, and a combined rate can reach close to 7.85% in a place like Homer. There's no statewide grocery exemption, because there's no statewide sales tax to exempt anything from in the first place. What gets taxed at your register depends on the borough or city ordinance where you operate: some exempt groceries outright, Juneau exempts them only for qualifying senior citizens, and Kenai Peninsula Borough taxes groceries at its standard local rate of around 3%. Alaska is a licence state, not a control state, so a grocery or convenience store can sell beer, wine and spirits off premise if it holds a Package Store Licence from the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, and those licences are limited to roughly one per 3,000 residents. A licence alone isn't enough, though: under Alaska's local option law each community votes to be wet, damp or dry, and more than 100 of the state's roughly 345 incorporated communities have gone damp or dry, which restricts or bans sales regardless of what licence you hold. Alaska sets the alcohol purchase age at 21 under AS 04.16.050. Tobacco and vape products work out to the same number in practice: federal law already requires 21 nationwide no matter what state text says, and while Alaska's own statute still listed 19, a 2026 bill to align it to 21 and add a new 25% retail tax on e-cigarettes passed the legislature but had not yet been confirmed signed as of the latest reporting.
