POS built for Hawaii convenience, grocery and liquor stores

Hawaii doesn't charge a sales tax at all. It taxes the business through the General Excise Tax, and the rate the law lets you pass on to a customer is not quite the same number as the tax itself. Get that pass-on figure wrong on the register and you either eat the tax-on-tax effect or short the state on every ticket.

Serving independent retailers across Honolulu, East Honolulu / Pearl City, Hilo, Kailua-Kona, Kahului, Kaneohe and the rest of Hawaii.

Hawaii rules, already configured

These are the settings an HI store has to get right. Storeveu ships with them in place rather than leaving them for you to build.

General excise tax

4% to 4.5%

Hawaii has no sales tax; the General Excise Tax is charged on the business at 4%, rising to 4.5% where a county 0.5% surcharge applies, which is true in all four counties for now. GET is legally the seller's liability, not the buyer's, but the law lets you pass on a slightly higher rate to the customer to cover the tax-on-tax effect, up to about 4.712% where the county surcharge applies and 4.166% where it does not. Storeveu's per-department tax rules carry the correct GET and pass-on rate for each store, inherited at state level with a per-store override for the county your location sits in.

HI-5 container deposit

5 cents, up to 2 liters

The HI-5 law puts a 5 cent refundable deposit on most beer, soda, water and other non-alcoholic drinks in containers up to 2 liters, in glass, plastic, aluminium or bi-metal. Milk, wine and straight spirits are excluded. The law's default is that a dealer runs its own in-store redemption point, and a store is only excused from that if it qualifies for one of a short list of exemptions: a small footprint under 5,000 square feet, a rural location, a subcontract with a certified redemption center, vending-machine-only sales, or sitting within 2 miles of an independently-run certified center in a high-density area. Storeveu tracks the 5 cent charge as its own non-taxable line the moment it's collected, and the Bottle Redemption screen is there to count containers and total the refund for the stores that do take returns.

No state lottery

Hawaii doesn't run one

Hawaii is one of the small number of states with no state lottery, so there are no lottery books, settlements or commission reports to configure at all. What does hit the register instead is that Hawaii taxes groceries in full: unprepared food carries the same GET as everything else, with no point-of-sale exemption, since relief for qualifying households runs through an income tax credit, not the till. Storeveu's per-department tax rules ring grocery items as taxable by default in Hawaii, rather than assuming the exemption most other states apply.

County-by-county alcohol licensing

Class 4 licence, hours set locally

There's no single state liquor authority: each of Hawaii's four counties, Honolulu, Hawaii, Maui and Kauai, runs its own Liquor Commission and sets its own rules. A convenience or grocery store sells beer, wine and spirits off-premise under a Class 4 Retail Dealer licence in sealed original containers only, with hours that run roughly 6am to 11pm outside Honolulu County and 6am to midnight inside it, though each county sets its own exact schedule. The purchase age is 21 for alcohol and 21 for tobacco and vapor products, a standard Hawaii adopted in 2016 before most of the country followed. Storeveu prompts for date of birth at the register on every age-restricted sale, so the check happens the same way regardless of which county's hours or rules apply.

Hawaii questions

How does the Hawaii bottle deposit work at checkout?

You collect a 5 cent deposit on covered containers, glass, plastic, aluminium and bi-metal, up to 2 liters, the moment they're rung up, and Storeveu keeps that charge on its own non-taxable line so it never gets folded into the GET total. Milk, wine and straight spirits don't carry the deposit. Whether your own store also has to redeem those containers depends on the law's default rule: a dealer is expected to run its own redemption point unless it qualifies for an exemption such as a small footprint, a rural location, a subcontract with a certified redemption center, vending-only sales, or a nearby certified center in a high-density area. If your store does take returns, the Bottle Redemption screen counts containers and totals the refund so the drawer reconciles at close.

Is Hawaii's General Excise Tax the same as sales tax?

Not quite. GET is legally charged to the business on its gross receipts, at 4% base and 4.5% where a county surcharge applies, which today means all four counties. Retailers are allowed, not required, to pass a slightly higher rate on to the customer to cover the tax-on-tax effect of a receipts tax, up to about 4.712% where the surcharge applies. Storeveu configures each store to the rate and pass-on figure for its own county rather than assuming one number statewide.

Does Hawaii have a state lottery?

No. Hawaii is one of the small number of US states without one, so there's nothing to configure for lottery books, ticket sales or shift settlement. If you're setting up a Hawaii store in Storeveu, you can skip the lottery module entirely and focus on GET, the HI-5 deposit and your alcohol licence.

Can a convenience store in Hawaii sell liquor?

Yes, with a Class 4 Retail Dealer licence for off-premise sale in sealed original containers. Because each of Hawaii's four counties runs its own Liquor Commission, the licence terms and hours, roughly 6am to 11pm outside Honolulu County and 6am to midnight inside it, come from your county rather than one state rule, so a multi-island operator needs to check each county separately. The purchase age is 21 for both alcohol and tobacco or vapor products. Storeveu prompts for date of birth on every age-restricted sale at the register, so the check is consistent even when the underlying county rules differ.

Common questions

How much does Storeveu cost?

Plans start at $39/mo (Starter) and $129/mo (Pro) per store, billed month-to-month with no contract or early-termination fee. Most modules are add-ons you turn on per store, see the pricing page for the full list.

Does Storeveu work offline?

Yes. The register is offline-first, it keeps ringing sales with no internet and syncs automatically the moment the connection returns, so a dropped router never stops checkout.

Is there a long-term contract?

No. Storeveu is month-to-month per store with no long-term contract and no early-termination fee, change tiers or cancel a store anytime.

Do I need special hardware?

No. Storeveu runs on standard Windows PCs with common receipt printers, cash drawers and PAX/Dejavoo terminals, bring your own, or buy the E15W dual-screen terminal.

How long does it take to switch from my current POS?

Most stores go live in 1-3 weeks. The team imports your catalog and customer list from systems like Square, Clover, Lightspeed or Heartland, usually overnight.

Can I manage multiple stores?

Yes. Run multiple locations from one back office with per-store pricing and inventory, plus a five-tier role hierarchy and custom roles.

Is my store data private and secure?

Every record is scoped to your organization and store, access is permission-gated by role, and one tenant can never see another’s data.
