POS built for Indiana convenience, grocery and liquor stores

Indiana is the only state that regulates beer by temperature. A store holding a beer dealer's permit cannot sell, display or give away beer it iced or cooled, while a package liquor store on a liquor dealer's permit may sell the same beer chilled. Put that alongside a grocery exemption that leaves candy, soft drinks and anything handed over with a utensil taxable at 7%, and most of what Indiana asks of you lives in the item file and at the register.

Serving independent retailers across Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Evansville, South Bend, Carmel, Fishers and the rest of Indiana.

Indiana rules, already configured

These are the settings an IN store has to get right. Storeveu ships with them in place rather than leaving them for you to build.

State sales tax

7% flat, no local rate

Indiana grants no sales tax authority to counties, cities or towns, so the combined rate is 7.00% everywhere in the state. There is no district or transit add-on to look up. Storeveu holds 7% as a state-level rate that every Indiana store inherits, with a per-store override if you ever need one.

Groceries exempt, with carve-outs

Food exempt, candy and soft drinks taxable

IC 6-2.5-5-20 exempts food and food ingredients sold for home consumption, but candy, soft drinks, dietary supplements, alcohol, tobacco and prepared food stay taxable at 7%. Bakery items, raw meat and take-and-bake items are exempt only when sold without utensils, and unheated food sold by weight or volume as a single item is exempt, so the utensil test decides the tax on the same product twice a day. County and municipal Food and Beverage excise taxes under IC 6-9 sit on top of the 7% where adopted, generally 1%, with Marion County at 2% and a combined 2% possible where a county and a city inside it both impose one. That is a local option rather than a statewide mandate, and many counties impose none, so Storeveu carries per-department tax rules that ring exempt and taxable food correctly on one receipt and never hardcodes the FAB rate statewide.

Hoosier Lottery

6% on sales, 1% on cashing

The State Lottery Commission of Indiana, which trades as the Hoosier Lottery, pays retailers 6% on tickets sold and a further 1% on prizes you cash. Those are two different rates on two different activities, so a single blended number will not reconcile against the Lottery statement. Storeveu records selling and cashing as separate streams and tracks scratch books through inventory, active, depleted and settled, with an end-of-shift ticket scan that works out how many tickets sold.

Alcohol and age checks

Beer sold warm, 21 for alcohol and tobacco

Under IC 7.1-5-10-11 a beer dealer's permit holder commits a Class B misdemeanor by selling, displaying or giving away beer the permittee iced or cooled, which is why grocery and convenience stores sell it warm. Carryout runs Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. the following day and Sunday from noon to 8:00 p.m. under IC 7.1-3-1-14, so the Sunday cutoff is the tighter one. Alcohol is 21 under IC 7.1-5-7-8, tobacco and vape are 21 since July 1, 2020, and IC 35-46-1-10.2 requires you to demand government-issued ID from any tobacco buyer who appears under 27. Storeveu prompts for date of birth at the register, ties alcohol authority to the signed-in operator through role-scoped access, and reports tobacco sales through the scan data module.

Indiana questions

Can my Indiana convenience store sell cold beer?

Not on a beer dealer's permit. IC 7.1-5-10-11 makes it unlawful for that permit holder to sell, display or give away beer the permittee iced or cooled, and it is a Class B misdemeanor. Package liquor stores holding a liquor dealer's permit may sell the same beer chilled, which is why the cooler layout differs between the two down the same street. The restriction survived a federal court challenge brought by the Indiana Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association and still appears in the code. Storeveu is configured around the categories your permit actually covers, so no chilled beer prompt reaches a register that is not allowed to ring one.

Which Indiana grocery items are taxable at the register?

Candy, soft drinks, dietary supplements, alcohol, tobacco and prepared food are taxable at 7%, while food and food ingredients sold for home consumption are exempt under IC 6-2.5-5-20. Prepared food is defined in DOR Sales Tax Information Bulletin #29 as food sold heated, food where you combine two or more ingredients, or food sold with eating utensils you provide. A hot case, roller grill, fountain drinks and self-serve coffee are therefore taxable, and an otherwise exempt bakery item becomes taxable the moment a utensil goes in the bag. Storeveu uses per-department tax rules so a basket holding bread, a candy bar and a hot sandwich rings each one correctly on a single receipt.

What lottery commission does Storeveu apply for Indiana?

6% on tickets sold, and 1% on prizes you cash. They are separate rates for separate work, so Storeveu records selling and cashing as their own streams rather than folding them into one figure that will not tie back to the Hoosier Lottery statement. Scratch books move through inventory, active, depleted and settled, and the end-of-shift ticket scan works out tickets sold from the start and end numbers. The rate is held at state level and inherited by every Indiana store you run, with a per-store override available.

Do I need different tax settings for different Indiana counties?

Not for sales tax. Indiana gives no sales tax authority to counties, cities or towns, so 7.00% is the rate in every jurisdiction and there is no rate table to maintain. The one local layer that can appear is the county or municipal Food and Beverage excise tax under IC 6-9, which applies on top of the 7% only where the General Assembly has authorised it and the local fiscal body has adopted an ordinance. It runs at 1% in most adopting jurisdictions, 2% in Marion County, and up to 2% where a county and a municipality within it both impose one. Check the DOR jurisdiction list on form ST-107FAB, then set it on the affected store rather than across the state, and note that stores in adopting jurisdictions file a separate FAB return with DOR.

Common questions

How much does Storeveu cost?

Plans start at $39/mo (Starter) and $129/mo (Pro) per store, billed month-to-month with no contract or early-termination fee. Most modules are add-ons you turn on per store, see the pricing page for the full list.

Does Storeveu work offline?

Yes. The register is offline-first, it keeps ringing sales with no internet and syncs automatically the moment the connection returns, so a dropped router never stops checkout.

Is there a long-term contract?

No. Storeveu is month-to-month per store with no long-term contract and no early-termination fee, change tiers or cancel a store anytime.

Do I need special hardware?

No. Storeveu runs on standard Windows PCs with common receipt printers, cash drawers and PAX/Dejavoo terminals, bring your own, or buy the E15W dual-screen terminal.

How long does it take to switch from my current POS?

Most stores go live in 1-3 weeks. The team imports your catalog and customer list from systems like Square, Clover, Lightspeed or Heartland, usually overnight.

Can I manage multiple stores?

Yes. Run multiple locations from one back office with per-store pricing and inventory, plus a five-tier role hierarchy and custom roles.

Is my store data private and secure?

Every record is scoped to your organization and store, access is permission-gated by role, and one tenant can never see another’s data.
