POS built for Kansas convenience, grocery and liquor stores

Kansas cut the state sales tax on groceries to zero on January 1, 2025, but city and county sales tax still applies to that same carton of milk, so a Kansas grocery item is never actually tax-free at the register. Community Improvement Districts and Transportation Development Districts can add another layer at specific addresses, so two stores on the same street can ring different combined rates. Getting the food line taxed at local-only, not the full state-plus-local rate, is a common Kansas POS misconfiguration.

Serving independent retailers across Wichita, Overland Park, Kansas City, Olathe, Topeka, Lawrence and the rest of Kansas.

Kansas rules, already configured

These are the settings a KS store has to get right. Storeveu ships with them in place rather than leaving them for you to build.

State sales tax

6.5% state, plus local, about 7.5% to 10%

Kansas layers city, county and, at some addresses, a Community Improvement District or Transportation Development District tax on top of the 6.5% state rate. Combined rates typically run about 7.5% to 10%, with the top reported combined rate around 11.5%. Because CID and TDD overlays attach to specific parcels rather than whole cities, two stores on the same street can carry different combined rates. Storeveu applies the rate from your store's exact jurisdiction code, not just the city name, and rolls it into every receipt automatically.

Grocery tax

0% state, local still applies

Kansas phased the state sales tax on groceries down in steps, from 4% in 2023 to 2% in 2024 to 0% as of January 1, 2025. That cut only touches the state share: city, county and any CID or TDD tax on the same grocery item still applies in full. Alcohol, prepared food and tobacco fall outside the food category and stay at the full combined rate. Storeveu keeps grocery items on a local-only tax class, separate from prepared food and alcohol, so a hot case item and a packaged item on the same receipt ring correctly.

Lottery commission

5% selling, 1% cashing

Kansas Lottery pays retailers a 5% commission on tickets sold and a separate 1% commission on prizes cashed at your store. Those are two different rates, not one blended commission, so selling and cashing need to be tracked separately to make sense of your payout. Storeveu applies both figures and keeps selling and cashing as two separate lines in your reporting. That way the numbers match what the Lottery's own statement shows instead of being flattened into one percentage.

Alcohol licence split

CMB beer only, 21 to buy

Kansas convenience and grocery stores hold a Cereal Malt Beverage off-premises licence, which allows beer up to 6% ABV and nothing stronger. Wine and spirits are sold only through a separately licensed retail liquor store, taxed at an 8% liquor enforcement tax instead of ordinary sales tax. Alcohol and tobacco purchase age are both 21, tobacco having moved up from 18 in 2023. Storeveu enforces the categories your licence actually covers and prompts for date of birth at checkout.

Kansas questions

Are groceries actually tax-free in Kansas?

Only the state's share. As of January 1, 2025 Kansas dropped the state sales tax on food and food ingredients to 0%, but city, county and any Community Improvement District or Transportation Development District tax on the same item keeps applying. So a carton of milk still carries whatever the local rate is at that address, even though the state charges nothing on it. Alcohol, prepared food and tobacco are not part of the food category and stay at the full combined rate. Storeveu keeps the grocery class on local-only tax so the receipt reflects the real amount owed.

Can my convenience store sell wine or spirits in Kansas?

No. A grocery or convenience store in Kansas holds a Cereal Malt Beverage off-premises licence, which since 2019 covers beer up to 6% ABV and nothing stronger. Wine and distilled spirits can only be sold through a separately licensed retail liquor store, which is also capped at spending no more than 20% of its gross sales on general merchandise outside alcohol, lottery and tobacco. Storeveu configures your product list around the licence you actually hold, so the wrong category never shows up at the register.

What lottery commission does Storeveu use for Kansas?

Kansas Lottery pays retailers a 5% commission on tickets sold and a separate 1% commission on prizes cashed at your store. Those are two different rates, not one blended commission, so selling and cashing need to be tracked separately to make sense of your payout. Storeveu applies both figures and keeps selling and cashing as two separate lines in your reporting. That way the numbers match what the Lottery's own statement shows instead of being flattened into one percentage.

Can I sell alcohol on Sundays in Kansas?

Only if your city or county has adopted expanded Sunday hours by ordinance or resolution, since Sunday sales are a local option rather than a statewide right. Where adopted, the window runs 9am to 8pm. Regardless of location, off-premises alcohol sales are closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Storeveu can set store-specific hour and holiday rules so a multi-location chain doesn't apply one state template to every register.

Common questions

How much does Storeveu cost?

Plans start at $39/mo (Starter) and $129/mo (Pro) per store, billed month-to-month with no contract or early-termination fee. Most modules are add-ons you turn on per store, see the pricing page for the full list.

Does Storeveu work offline?

Yes. The register is offline-first, it keeps ringing sales with no internet and syncs automatically the moment the connection returns, so a dropped router never stops checkout.

Is there a long-term contract?

No. Storeveu is month-to-month per store with no long-term contract and no early-termination fee, change tiers or cancel a store anytime.

Do I need special hardware?

No. Storeveu runs on standard Windows PCs with common receipt printers, cash drawers and PAX/Dejavoo terminals, bring your own, or buy the E15W dual-screen terminal.

How long does it take to switch from my current POS?

Most stores go live in 1-3 weeks. The team imports your catalog and customer list from systems like Square, Clover, Lightspeed or Heartland, usually overnight.

Can I manage multiple stores?

Yes. Run multiple locations from one back office with per-store pricing and inventory, plus a five-tier role hierarchy and custom roles.

Is my store data private and secure?

Every record is scoped to your organization and store, access is permission-gated by role, and one tenant can never see another’s data.
