POS built for Louisiana convenience, grocery and liquor stores

Louisiana exempts groceries from its 5% state sales tax, but parishes and cities aren't required to do the same, so a single item can ring zero state tax and a nonzero local tax depending on the store's address. It's also unusually open on alcohol: a convenience or grocery store can sell beer, wine and spirits from one counter, something most licence states keep separate. Between the split tax base and the two permits needed to reach that shelf, a Louisiana register needs configuration most states don't.

Serving independent retailers across New Orleans-Metairie, Baton Rouge, Shreveport-Bossier City, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Houma-Thibodaux and the rest of Louisiana.

Louisiana rules, already configured

These are the settings an LA store has to get right. Storeveu ships with them in place rather than leaving them for you to build.

State sales tax

5%, plus a separate local layer

Louisiana adds a 5% state rate, then parishes, municipalities, school boards and special districts layer on their own tax, collected separately by the parish rather than the state. Local rates typically run 4% to 7%, so most stores land in a 9% to 10.5% combined range, and economic development districts can push that into the 12% to 13.5% range. Because state and local returns are filed on separate systems, an item can owe zero state tax and full local tax in the same transaction. Storeveu applies state-level rates across every store and lets each location override for its exact parish and municipal jurisdiction.

Grocery exemption

State exempt, local optional

Groceries bought for home use are exempt from the state's 5% tax under the Louisiana constitution, but that exemption only binds the state itself, not parishes and cities. Many parishes choose to exempt groceries locally too, but it isn't guaranteed, so the same item can ring zero state tax and a nonzero local tax depending on address. A hot case, deli sandwich or roller grill item sits outside the exemption entirely and is taxed at the full state and local rate. Storeveu's per-department tax rules ring the exempt grocery and the taxable hot case correctly on the same receipt, with a per-store override for whichever parishes don't follow the state exemption.

Lottery commission

5% selling, cashing tiered to 2%

The Louisiana Lottery pays a 5% selling commission, but the cashing side isn't a flat rate: it's a five-tier schedule running from 0.50% on tickets worth $1 to $25 up to 2.00% on tickets worth $201 to $600. Jackpot winners add a selling bonus on top, 1% of the prize for Lotto and Easy 5, or the greater of $40,000 or 1% of Louisiana's share of the prize pool for Powerball and Mega Millions. Treating cashing as a flat 2% overstates what a typical store actually earns, since most tickets cashed fall in the lower bands. Storeveu tracks lottery books through inventory, active, depleted and settled, and the end-of-shift ticket scan works out exactly how many tickets you sold so your numbers match the Lottery's own statement.

Alcohol licensing and age

One counter, two permits, 21+

Louisiana is a licence state, and an unusually open one: a convenience or grocery store can sell beer, wine and spirits from the same counter, something most licence states reserve for package stores. Getting there takes two separate ATC permits, one for high-content beverages and one for low-content, plus a matching local permit, and every employee who sells alcohol or tobacco needs Responsible Vendor certification within 45 days of hire. Wet and dry status is set parish by parish and ward by ward, so hours and availability vary by address. Both alcohol and tobacco carry a 21-plus age line, and Storeveu prompts for date of birth at the register and keeps access role-scoped to staff cleared to ring those categories.

Louisiana questions

Do convenience stores charge sales tax on groceries in Louisiana?

The state's 5% tax doesn't apply to food bought for home use, but that exemption only covers the state's own rate. Parishes and cities aren't required to follow along, so the same grocery item can ring zero state tax and a nonzero local tax depending on where the store sits. A hot case, deli sandwich or anything else prepared for immediate eating is fully taxable at the state and local rate regardless. Storeveu's per-department tax rules keep the exempt grocery aisle and the taxable hot case separated on one receipt.

Can a Louisiana convenience store sell liquor?

Yes. Louisiana is a licence state with no state liquor monopoly, and a single store can sell beer, wine and distilled spirits from one counter, which is unusual among licence states that typically wall spirits off into package stores. Reaching that shelf takes two ATC permits rather than one, a high-content permit and a low-content permit, plus a matching local permit. Some parishes and wards are dry or partially dry by local-option vote, so confirm the store's own jurisdiction before assuming spirits are allowed. Hours are also set locally rather than by the state.

How much commission does the Louisiana Lottery pay retailers?

Selling commission is 5%. Cashing pay is tiered rather than flat, starting at 0.50% on tickets worth $1 to $25 and climbing to 2.00% on tickets worth $201 to $600, so most tickets a store cashes earn well under the top rate. Jackpot winners add a selling bonus too, 1% of the prize for Lotto and Easy 5, or the greater of $40,000 or 1% of Louisiana's share of the prize pool for Powerball and Mega Millions. Storeveu's shift-end ticket scan works out exactly how many tickets were sold so the commission report lines up with the Lottery's own statement.

Does Louisiana have a bottle deposit law?

No. Louisiana isn't one of the ten states with a container deposit law, so there's no deposit or CRV line to add at the register and no redemption obligation on the store. Scrap aluminium still has commodity value to a recycler, but that's a separate transaction, not a statutory refund the store administers. Storeveu leaves deposit and redemption handling switched off entirely for a Louisiana store rather than forcing an unused workflow.

Common questions

How much does Storeveu cost?

Plans start at $39/mo (Starter) and $129/mo (Pro) per store, billed month-to-month with no contract or early-termination fee. Most modules are add-ons you turn on per store, see the pricing page for the full list.

Does Storeveu work offline?

Yes. The register is offline-first, it keeps ringing sales with no internet and syncs automatically the moment the connection returns, so a dropped router never stops checkout.

Is there a long-term contract?

No. Storeveu is month-to-month per store with no long-term contract and no early-termination fee, change tiers or cancel a store anytime.

Do I need special hardware?

No. Storeveu runs on standard Windows PCs with common receipt printers, cash drawers and PAX/Dejavoo terminals, bring your own, or buy the E15W dual-screen terminal.

How long does it take to switch from my current POS?

Most stores go live in 1-3 weeks. The team imports your catalog and customer list from systems like Square, Clover, Lightspeed or Heartland, usually overnight.

Can I manage multiple stores?

Yes. Run multiple locations from one back office with per-store pricing and inventory, plus a five-tier role hierarchy and custom roles.

Is my store data private and secure?

Every record is scoped to your organization and store, access is permission-gated by role, and one tenant can never see another’s data.
