POS for Chicago convenience, grocery and liquor stores

Chicago stacks four separate tax layers onto every general sale: Illinois state tax, Cook County's home rule tax, the city's own retailers' occupation tax, and a regional transit tax that rose in August 2026. Combined, that reaches 10.50%, and prepared food, bottled soda and packaged alcohol each carry their own extra city tax on top of it. Some precincts are voted dry outright under local referendum.

Serving independent retailers across The Loop, Wicker Park, Lincoln Park, Hyde Park, Pilsen, Logan Square and the rest of Chicago.

What is different about running a store in Chicago

These are the Chicago specifics on top of the Illinois rules. Storeveu holds them on the store record, so a multi location operator does not run a separate catalog per city.

Combined sales tax rate

10.50%, since 1 August 2026

Chicago's rate is four layers stacked on the state base: 6.25% Illinois, 1.75% Cook County, 1.25% City of Chicago, and 1.25% regional transit, recently renamed NITA (Northern Illinois Transit Authority, formerly the RTA), which rose from 1.00% to 1.25% on 1 August 2026. Storeveu holds that blended rate as a per-store override on the state configuration, so a Chicago location rings 10.50% while the rest of your Illinois stores keep their own local blend.

Prepared food and soda taxes

11% to 12%, plus soda taxes

A 0.50% City Restaurant Tax applies to anything sold for immediate consumption, so a heated rotisserie chicken, deli tray or roller grill item is taxed even though the same item cold in the meat case is not, bringing prepared food to 11.00% combined. Inside the downtown Loop, River North and Fulton Market core, an extra 1.00% MPEA tax applies, taking that to 12.00%. Bottled and canned soda carry their own 3% tax on retail gross receipts, and fountain syrup carries a 9% tax charged upstream to your supplier. Storeveu's per-department tax rules keep the hot case and the cooler taxed apart from the rest of the register.

City liquor licence and new tax

City licence, plus 1.5% tax

Selling packaged beer, wine or spirits needs a Package Goods licence from Chicago's own Local Liquor Control Commission, on top of your state licence, running roughly $4,400 plus a $40 publication fee. Since 1 March 2026 the city also collects a 1.5% off-premise Liquor Tax on the purchase price of packaged alcohol, replacing the old per-gallon city tax and stacking on the 10.50% sales tax. Some precincts are voted dry under local referendum, so whether you can hold a licence at all depends on the exact block. Storeveu's per-department tax rules carry that liquor tax on your alcohol SKUs alongside the state rate your store already inherits.

Chicago questions

What sales tax rate does Storeveu configure for a Chicago store?

Chicago's combined rate is 10.50%, stacking 6.25% Illinois state tax, 1.75% Cook County, 1.25% City of Chicago, and 1.25% regional transit tax. That transit portion, now run by NITA (formerly the RTA) under a December 2025 state law, rose from 1.00% to 1.25% on 1 August 2026, so a rate table built before then is already out of date. Storeveu holds Chicago's rate as a per-store override on the state configuration, so this location updates without touching the rate on stores elsewhere in Illinois.

Does Chicago tax my deli case and fountain drinks differently from packaged groceries?

Yes. A 0.50% City Restaurant Tax applies to anything sold for immediate consumption, so a heated rotisserie chicken or a roller grill item is taxed even though the same item cold in the meat case is not, and it brings prepared food to 11.00% combined. If your store sits inside the downtown Loop, River North or Fulton Market core, an extra 1.00% MPEA tax applies as well, taking prepared food there to 12.00%. Bottled and canned soda carry their own 3% city tax on gross receipts, and fountain syrup carries a 9% tax charged upstream to your supplier. Storeveu's per-department tax rules keep all of this apart from your general merchandise rate.

How much is the Chicago bag fee and how do I ring it?

The Chicago Checkout Bag Tax is 15 cents per paper or plastic bag at the register, raised from 10 cents on 1 January 2026. Of that, 14 cents is remitted to the city and you keep 1 cent as a collection allowance. It has to appear as its own itemised line on the receipt rather than being folded into the item price. Storeveu's per-department tax rules keep it separate from your sales tax total.

What changed with Chicago's liquor tax and licensing?

Since 1 March 2026 the city collects a 1.5% off-premise Liquor Tax on the purchase price of packaged beer, wine and spirits, replacing the previous per-gallon city tax and stacking on top of the 10.50% sales tax. You still need a Package Goods licence from Chicago's own Local Liquor Control Commission, separate from your state licence, running roughly $4,400 plus a $40 publication fee. Some precincts are voted dry under local referendum, so whether a store can hold a licence at all depends on the exact block, not just the city. Storeveu's per-department tax rules carry the liquor tax on your alcohol SKUs alongside the state rate your store already inherits.

Common questions

How much does Storeveu cost?

Plans start at $39/mo (Starter) and $129/mo (Pro) per store, billed month-to-month with no contract or early-termination fee. Most modules are add-ons you turn on per store, see the pricing page for the full list.

Does Storeveu work offline?

Yes. The register is offline-first, it keeps ringing sales with no internet and syncs automatically the moment the connection returns, so a dropped router never stops checkout.

Is there a long-term contract?

No. Storeveu is month-to-month per store with no long-term contract and no early-termination fee, change tiers or cancel a store anytime.

Do I need special hardware?

No. Storeveu runs on standard Windows PCs with common receipt printers, cash drawers and PAX/Dejavoo terminals, bring your own, or buy the E15W dual-screen terminal.

How long does it take to switch from my current POS?

Most stores go live in 1-3 weeks. The team imports your catalog and customer list from systems like Square, Clover, Lightspeed or Heartland, usually overnight.

Can I manage multiple stores?

Yes. Run multiple locations from one back office with per-store pricing and inventory, plus a five-tier role hierarchy and custom roles.

Is my store data private and secure?

Every record is scoped to your organization and store, access is permission-gated by role, and one tenant can never see another’s data.
