POS for Seattle convenience, grocery and liquor stores

Seattle's combined sales tax rate is 10.55% as of January 1, 2026, after the city and King County each added a fresh 0.1% public safety tax on top of what was 10.35%, meaningfully higher than many other Washington cities and higher than King County's own unincorporated-area rate. A rate that just moved is exactly the kind of thing that goes stale in a register nobody rechecked. Seattle also runs its own Sweetened Beverage Tax on sodas and energy drinks, collected from distributors rather than rung at your register, so your cooler and fountain pricing carries a cost the rest of Washington does not.

Serving independent retailers across Downtown, Capitol Hill, Pike Place Market, Ballard, Fremont, Chinatown-International District and the rest of Seattle.

What is different about running a store in Seattle

These are the Seattle specifics on top of the Washington rules. Storeveu holds them on the store record, so a multi location operator does not run a separate catalog per city.

Combined sales tax

10.55%, up from 10.35% in Jan 2026

Washington's 6.5% state rate sits underneath a local layer that Seattle and King County each raised by 0.1% for a new public safety sales tax on January 1, 2026, taking the combined Seattle rate from 10.35% to 10.55%, meaningfully higher than many other Washington cities and higher than King County's own unincorporated-area rate. A rate that just moved is exactly the kind of change that leaves a rate table stale if nobody catches it.

Sweetened Beverage Tax

$0.0175 per fluid ounce

Seattle charges its own Sweetened Beverage Tax of $0.0175 per fluid ounce on sodas, energy drinks and other sweetened beverages distributed for sale in the city, reduced to $0.01 an ounce for beverages from smaller certified manufacturers and waived entirely for manufacturers under $2 million in global revenue. It is collected from the distributor rather than rung at your register, so it shows up as a higher invoice cost on your cooler and fountain lines instead of a separate line on the receipt. Your ordinary Washington sales tax on the drink still applies as usual, and since the beverage tax itself never appears as its own register line, there is nothing extra for the till to track beyond that higher invoice cost.

Alcohol Impact Areas

Restricted products barred in 2 city zones

Seattle has designated two Alcohol Impact Areas, the Central Core AIA and the North AIA, covering parts of downtown, Pioneer Square, the Chinatown-International District, Capitol Hill and the University District, where the state has restricted sale of a specific list of high-alcohol, low-cost products, such as certain fortified wines and malt liquors, at grocery and convenience stores. A store inside one of those zones has to keep those SKUs off the shelf entirely, something a store elsewhere in Washington does not have to manage. Liquor licence applications and renewals inside Seattle city limits also get an added review step, a formal objection window of 20 days, or 60 days inside an AIA, before the state board can act. Storeveu's role-scoped access keeps who can add a new product to a store's catalog limited to the managers responsible for keeping that store's shelf compliant.

Seattle questions

What sales tax rate should I be charging in Seattle right now?

10.55%, combined. Washington's own 6.5% state rate sits underneath it, and Seattle and King County each added a new 0.1% public safety sales tax on January 1, 2026, moving the local layer up from 10.35%, meaningfully higher than many other Washington cities and higher than King County's own unincorporated-area rate. It's worth checking your register is on the current figure rather than the one from before the increase.

Do I need to add Seattle's Sweetened Beverage Tax as a line item at checkout?

No. The tax is $0.0175 per fluid ounce, charged to distributors when they bring sweetened sodas and energy drinks into the city, not collected from customers at your register. It steps down to $0.01 an ounce for beverages from smaller certified manufacturers and does not apply at all to manufacturers under $2 million in global revenue, so your invoice cost on affected products already reflects it before the drink reaches your cooler. Your ordinary Washington sales tax on the drink still applies as normal, unaffected by this tax.

Are there products I'm not allowed to sell in my Capitol Hill or downtown Seattle store?

Possibly, if your store sits inside one of Seattle's two Alcohol Impact Areas, the Central Core AIA and the North AIA, which together cover parts of downtown, Pioneer Square, the Chinatown-International District, Capitol Hill and the University District. Inside those boundaries, the state has restricted sale of a specific list of high-alcohol, low-cost products, such as certain fortified wines and malt liquors, at grocery and convenience stores, and those SKUs need to come off your shelves entirely rather than just off promotion. This does not apply to a Seattle store outside the two zones, or to any store elsewhere in Washington. If you are applying for or renewing a liquor licence inside city limits, expect an added review step too: the City Attorney's precinct liaison attorneys get a formal objection window before the state board acts, 20 days normally and 60 days if your address sits inside an AIA.

Does Seattle require its own business licence on top of the state one?

Yes. Seattle requires its own city business licence and levies a separate city Business and Occupation tax on gross receipts, in addition to the statewide B&O tax every Washington business already pays. As of January 1, 2026 the retail and wholesale city rate is 0.342% on gross receipts above a $2 million standard deduction, up from the old $100,000 threshold. It is a back office filing matter rather than anything rung at the register, so it does not change your Storeveu tax setup, but it is worth flagging to whoever files your city return since it is a genuinely separate filing from the state B&O.

Common questions

How much does Storeveu cost?

Plans start at $39/mo (Starter) and $129/mo (Pro) per store, billed month-to-month with no contract or early-termination fee. Most modules are add-ons you turn on per store, see the pricing page for the full list.

Does Storeveu work offline?

Yes. The register is offline-first, it keeps ringing sales with no internet and syncs automatically the moment the connection returns, so a dropped router never stops checkout.

Is there a long-term contract?

No. Storeveu is month-to-month per store with no long-term contract and no early-termination fee, change tiers or cancel a store anytime.

Do I need special hardware?

No. Storeveu runs on standard Windows PCs with common receipt printers, cash drawers and PAX/Dejavoo terminals, bring your own, or buy the E15W dual-screen terminal.

How long does it take to switch from my current POS?

Most stores go live in 1-3 weeks. The team imports your catalog and customer list from systems like Square, Clover, Lightspeed or Heartland, usually overnight.

Can I manage multiple stores?

Yes. Run multiple locations from one back office with per-store pricing and inventory, plus a five-tier role hierarchy and custom roles.

Is my store data private and secure?

Every record is scoped to your organization and store, access is permission-gated by role, and one tenant can never see another’s data.
